About the Event

Can you use a lathe and wood-turning tools? If you are an adult and you would like to learn, this might be the course for you. Once you have learnt the basics you will then experience the pleasure and satisfaction of creating objects such as tool handles, bowls, vases and other items to make and perhaps give as gifts.

The course will include:

  • characteristics of wood
  • Lathe and components
  • Safety procedures for all tools and lathe
  • Tool use incl. skew chisel, bowl/spindle gouges, parting tool- all using the ABC practice of wood turning
  • Chuck mounting techniques
  • Face plate and spindle turning
  • Sanding and polishing
  • Tool sharpening
  • Projects to make (dibber, , bowl, saucer, bud vase, candle stick)

All materials are provided, including all consumables such as wood blanks, sand paper, polish, glue and all tools for use during lessons. Lathes are electronically speed controlled.

Materials Required: 

Just a note pad and a pen.

Who will be teaching? 

Brian Falkenberg, will be your experienced teacher. Brian undertook a two-year apprenticeship with a professional turner and has been producing wood turned articles for 15 years. He also runs classes at his home in Woodend and has an extensive stock of native wood species. He loves sharing his skills and encouraging others to enjoy learning this craft and creating fine objects.  Brian’s work has been exhibited at the Stoneycreek Gallery in Daylesford; the Treehouse Gallery in Birregurra and at “Art on Piper” in Kyneton.

How much does it cost? 

The cost for this eight session workshop is $400

Term 1 2024 Information

The course will run for 8 sessions over four weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6pm to 8.30pm from Tuesday 20th February until Thursday 14th March 2024.
