What it is all about?

An inspiring space to explore different ways of moving in gentle and supported ways: to activate your imagination and your expressive self. Drawing on improvisation, mindfulness and creative dance, you will experience invigorating approaches to wellbeing and feeling connected to yourself and others.

What will we cover?

Each session will be different and will include a warm up space to support connection to your inner self, the environment and to others. Themed activities will guide you to connect your movements to your breath, stories, poems, diverse props, wonderful music and silence. You will be led by Marita, to move in solo, duets and with the whole group and you will always have the option to ‘opt out and just watch – or do your own thing’, if anything feels too uncomfortable for you. In closing, there will be time for rest and relaxation, with mindfulness practices to integrate these new experiences, where you can feel warm and nurtured before going about your day. If the individuals in the group are willing to explore moving outdoors, then we will take a short walk into nature nearby on some sunny mornings and explore moving gently in connection with nature, similar to Tai Chi.

Some of the many benefits for you may include:

  • A safe, friendly, non-judgemental and respectful space for you
  • An all-abilities space, so that regardless of any mobility or range of movement restrictions you may have, you will not feel prevented from joining in this class at your own comfort level
  • Experience new energising ways to activate your mind-body, especially if you don’t like the regular exercise, Yoga, Pilates or stylised dance classes that are on offer for Seniors, or you just want to try something new and different
  • Gently enhance your balance, coordination, muscle tone and core strength
  • Release muscular tension and possibly unwanted emotions through your body
  • Keep your mind-body enthused and animated through creative arts approaches that can support your mental health & wellbeing
  • A space to experience meaningful movement and meaningful engagement and hopefully find moments of delight and joy

Please wear loose and comfortable clothing and please bring an open and curious mind…

Who will be teaching?

Marita photo

Marita Jacobsson draws from her decade long Nursing career, that included caring for seniors post-operatively and with chronic health issues in hospitals and private homes. More recently she is inspired by her privileged work offering creative movement and dance classes as well as Dance Movement Therapy to groups in Melbourne: people with varying abilities and varying degrees of physical and cognitive decline. This inspiration combined with her own movement and body-mindfulness practices in: Contact Improvisation, Five Rhythms dance, Yoga and movement in nature, as well as her creative arts research in Melbourne, Sweden and Timor-Leste, will inform and stimulate these innovative classes. For more information about these classes send her an email: [email protected] or call her on: 0404 008 432.
