Please note: It gets messy!
These classes for children are designed to ignite creativity that lies within us all, giving them the opportunity to realise their abilities that they may not realise they have. By offering children a platform to think “outside the box” and explore many mediums and different ways to create, they can
take in this new information and play with it, have fun and then blend it together with what they already know about their world, to make something that is essentially their own, but is also an outcome of collaboration and socialising with those in their class.
Not only does this empower them, knowing that they have this capacity to create, but it also sets them up for the future to use their minds in a way that is essential in a technological world that is developing at a rapid rate. It allows them to process all types of information and adapt it to new environments beyond what they expect or already know.
Six famous artists will be discussed – a story about each will be read.
In keeping with the story, a particular medium will be introduced.
Please bring a snack and drink bottle.
Sophie Buttner has practiced as a professional Sculptor/Maker/Art finisher for the Film, Television and Theatre Industry for nearly two decades.
After studying and practising Graphic Design, Sophie travelled through Europe where She discovered mask making it Florence, Italy. After learning this art, She was fortunate to take up an apprenticeship with her teacher in Classical Sculpture.
She loved it so much, and knew from then on that it was what She would do – Sculpt and make!
After returning to Australia and working as a Sculptor, Sophie wanted to be able to make “anything” that she could imagine. She felt limited with just clay, so She went to NIDA to study prop construction and gain more technical knowledge by using different tools and equipment. This aided in making things in so many different mediums for many different applications. Once the Diploma was completed, she went straight into the Film industry where She Sculpted and made things everyday in many interesting places with wonderfully colourful characters and the rest is history!
Moving to Woodend last year with her family, Sophie is thrilled to be sharing her skills and passion to make “anything out of anything”. She stills practises Sculpture (wax) from her home studio and makes silver and gold jewellery.
