Growing up in a small country village in Austria (about the size of Woodend – or a bit smaller), I was fortunate to learn from my parents as they were preserving food and cooking from scratch. It was a field to table approach we were growing our own vegetables and fruit.
My father was a qualified butcher, although he was not working as a butcher by the time I was born he would often bring home half a pig and my sister and I would help with carving it up, bagging and freezing the meat. Family friends were huntsmen who were regulating dear, rabbit and wild pig numbers in the forests. My father was often asked to help with the butchering and we got to experience community working together, sharing and feasting together.
In Austria there are lots of traditions around food. It brings people together.
My love and passion for food was further nurtured at one of the leading hospitality colleges in Vienna.
After graduating I spent some time in Switzerland and came to Australia about twelve years ago.
By living in different places I had the pleasure of experiencing numerous customs and collect a diverse range of skills.
Food does not just nourish us; it connects us, brings the community together and inspires passion!
Today I live on a little farm about 30 minutes from Woodend where I aspire to grow ethical food and get back to basics. Some of you might have met me previously at Holgates where I worked until July this year.
